The outcomes of the NATO Summit in Ankara clearly indicate that the Russia-Ukraine war will persist and direct US assistance for Israeli interventions in the Middle East will continue. The United States is driving the alliance toward its own strategic and economic interests, pressuring European allies to significantly increase defense spending. Generating these resources directly impacts geopolitical calculations over Cyprus, the heart of the Eastern Mediterranean.
Recent developments reveal that the overstepping initiatives of UN Envoy María Ángela Holguín are fueled by the void four-step framework proposed by TRNC President Tufan Erhürman. Conducted behind closed doors and hidden from the public, this process serves a blueprint aimed at dissolving the statehood of the TRNC and withdrawing Turkish troops from the island. Erhürman’s model—framed as “political equality” with 4 Turkish ministers against 7 Greek Cypriot ministers requiring only a single Turkish vote—relegates the Turkish population to a status well behind the rights guaranteed in the 1960 agreements. Furthermore, setting arbitrary start and end dates for negotiations holds no deterrent value against a Greek Cypriot side backed by the EU and NATO.
The most severe diplomatic blunder was the declaration to accept all past convergences without renegotiation. Greek Cypriot Leader Christodoulides capitalized on this weakness by demanding the implementation of concessions made during the Akıncı era, such as cross-voting and the asymmetric citizenship ratio of four Greek Cypriots to one Turk, handing the Turkish side a major diplomatic defeat. The emerging plan demands the immediate return of key strategic and agricultural areas—Varosha, Morphou, and Mesaoria—to the Greek Cypriots, while rendering promised direct flights subject to Greek Cypriot authority. Ultimately, it seeks to terminate the guarantee system, remove Turkish forces, and convert Cyprus into a NATO outpost.
The Greek Cypriot leadership recognizes that time works in favor of Türkiye, whose military, economic, and geopolitical power is expanding rapidly. Consequently, they seek to resolve the issue using the lure of EU integration and sophisticated perception management before Türkiye’s regional role is fully solidified. The gains achieved through historical sacrifices—including 80,000 martyrs since 1571—cannot be erased. We must remain vigilant against Western attempts to interpret diplomatic engagement as a sign of weakness and steadfastly defend our national cause.
